earBuzz Review:
The Bongodogs' latest CD, "Viva Caliche", literally translates to Live Caliche. .not that we know what Caliche means. .but our guess it means great jamming salsa/ranchera/blues music. All 8 tracks are live installments that feature some tremendous musical solo passages along with fun humorous lyrics and tunes. The CD opens with "Cuba Libre", a fast-moving 1-2-4 tune dedicated to the Yankee pitcher, El Duque. Track 3, "If Love Could Kill", is a perfectly paced 16-bar slow blues that features all the players in solos. The highlight here is of immensely talented and intuitive musician/trumpeter, Steve Philippus, that provides some of the most musically gratifying horn soloing we've heard in a while. Also impressive is sax-man, Terry Tomlin, in track 4's, "San Benito Flood Song". Tomlin squeaks to the frequency stratosphere in the tune - mp3'd here in the clip. Track 7, "Love you Like a Monkey", is another fast mover that features Philippus again - this time stretching the space with jazz-tinged scales and pacing. The final track on the live CD is a fitting, "The Alcohol Song". The band sings, "first i feel good, then i feel better, then i feel dizzy, then i can't remember'. Not sure what happened to the ralphing step, but glad it didn't make the lyric sheet. The tune has 'more cowbell' and grooves along at a energetic and fun tempo. The CD's a great representation of the Bongodogs party atmosphere during their performances.
