earBuzz Review:
Ray Kaminsky has released a wonderfully laid back collection of steel/acoustic guitar traditional blues with the CD, "Barker Hill Blues". In it you will find 14 tunes (listed at the end of this review) that range from Robert Johnson's "Walkin' Blues" to the traditional gospel blues tune, "Will The Circle Be Unbroken". Kaminsky's tribute to the blues is well done, and his affection for the genre is apparent as he performs bottleneck slide with the skill of a Crossroads visitor. Track 5 is the wonderful, "Malted Milk", another Johnson tune which Ray does with feeling and penchant for the blues vocal sound. Track 6, "The Sportin' Life Blues", winds sadly about the dead and gone, but happy as heck that there's a harmonica on board for the tune - accompanying Ray's smooth delivery and pedal picking acoustic guitar lines. Track 10, "Kind Hearted Woman", is certainly dedicated to the woman he calls a fiesty wench in the liner notes, his wife Ellen. The only problem we have is that Ray didn't put "John Henry" on the disc.. I mean, C'MON. Next time Dan. We've also featured one of the guitar solo sections in "Walkin' Blues" so you can hear Ray scratch dem strings but good. All tolled, the record stands out as a cool collection of traditional blues jams, done to a soothing tee by Virginia based Ray.
